The Overflow
Dunne-Pickup
Once again Professor George H. Dunne, S. J. writes Brother Harry Pickup, Jr., that he is having trouble with his censors. He has had his paper (a response to Pickup's last article) in the hands of his censors now for some months, and they have declined to release it. He is still hopeful, however of getting the material to Pickup ere long, and writes "All of this delay has been as unsatisfactory for me as I know it has been for you." When, and if, the material is released, we will publish it along with Brother Pickup's response.
Holt-Totty
Since last report of the proposed Indianapolis debate, we have word that W. L. Totty rather than G. C. Brewer is to represent those who teach that colleges and benevolent institutions as well as other "good works" should be supported from the church treasuries. Tentative date for the debate is set in early October. Charles A. Holt, Jr., will affirm the "all-sufficiency of the church" in the discussion.
An Interesting Question
Brother Cogdill's picking up the telephone to answer a call of inquiry concerning his "death" reminds us of the irate politician whose death notice had been printed by mistake in a local opposition newspaper, and who was calling the editor to tell him what he thought of such. "This is Senator Snort," he announced in roaring tones over the wire, "and I want to know if you have seen the 'death notice' your paper printed about me in the latest edition." "Why, y-e-e-s-s," replied the startled editor; "by the way, where are you calling from?"
The Adams Articles
Our sincere thanks to several dozen subscribers who sent us their back issues containing the series of articles James W. Adams wrote on the "Herald of Truth." We now have enough on hand to supply any who may have missed that discussion, and will be glad to send them on request."
No More Mission Work, Thank You!
"We discussed the possibility of starting another congregation but thought it better to enlarge this one. In this area if you start a congregation, false teachers and their sympathizers sit by until the congregation has consumed all the money it can get from the church which starts it and then they take over. We spent approximately $9,000 at Frankfort, and the results, if any, are very meager. In view of all that and since elders can oversee only one congregation scripturally, we think it advisable to spend our money and efforts where we can guard the truth." (Quotation from "The Informer" bulletin of the Garfield Heights. Church in Indianapolis, W. L. Totty, minister.)
Emmett McLoughlin's Article
We carry on the front page this week an article by Emmett McLoughlin of Phoenix, Arizona. We found the article highly interesting, and urge you to read it. Next week we will run the rest of the article, which was originally delivered as a speech in Washington, D. C. We can now fill orders for Mr. McLoughlin's tremendously fascinating book, "People's Padre," which gives the full story of his life in the priesthood and his break with the hierarchy. It is a book that ought to awaken all Americans to the insidious, ever growing danger of the monstrous religio-political power which is threatening our national existence. Price of the book is $3.95.
Thanks!
As most of our readers know, we send the Gospel Guardian each year to some 600 to 800 "preacher boys" in various Christian colleges. The administrations of these schools supply us with the names of their preacher students, and we put them all on the mailing list gratis for the school year. We have done this now for several years; and every year we receive many letters of appreciation from the boys in the various schools. We wish to acknowledge a joint letter signed by some thirty or thirty-five boys in Florida Christian College expressing their appreciation and thanks. Also quite a number of letters from Harding College boys show us our gesture in sending the paper is not unappreciated. Boys from other schools have written in, but we've had more letters from these two! Thanks to all of you — and we wish for each of you a useful and happy summer's work in the cause of Christ.
Need A Preacher?
"I know a preacher who has some time for meetings this summer or fall. He is sound in the faith and stands firmly on the issues that confront the church today. If you do not have a man for a meeting and desire to contact the preacher mentioned, I shall be happy to put you in touch with him." — (Signed) H. F. Sharp, Box 124, Conway, Arkansas.
Not Yet
We're sorry, but we'll just have to keep on saying "not yet" to the inquiries as to whether we have received the articles from Brother Harper and Brother Buchanan on "What Is Wrong With the Missionary Societies?" Both brethren have promised articles (Brother Harper's will be entitled, 'The Lufkin Cooperation Plan'), and we will print them as soon as we have them. We ask your patience.
