Speak Out Brethren!

Gene Martin, Brenham, Texas

It is never amiss to speak out against digressions from truth and right. In fact, it is our solemn duty to do so. Anyone who has the courage of his convictions will want to do it. We should speak the truth in love, not "vent our spleens" or attempt to win arguments for arguments sake. We should "speak as the oracles of God" and contend earnestly for truth; we should have neither the time nor the inclination to abuse and vilify brethren.

It is encouraging to see so many take stands upon their convictions concerning issues before the church today. Yet, many have not spoken their convictions upon these matters. I think they should do so. We need to know "who is on the Lord's side," and brethren everywhere need to know that those who oppose unscriptural promotions are not nearly so much in the minority as it may seem. Some preachers feel that they are not well enough known to have much influence. so they hesitate to write articles admonishing on questionable practices. But they can help by doing such, and they will have influence. Each one who "stands up to be counted" helps to stem misdirected trends. It is unfair that a few courageous and capable men must bear the brunt of movements against scriptural authority and practice when so many others could lend valuable assistance. Many older preachers whose knowledge and wisdom are widely esteemed can help much more than younger men of less experience in the fight of faith, and they should rise to meet the opposition with all their power. But the younger preachers do count, and they should not fail to put forth their efforts too.

I am glad to see Brother Showalter publishing articles in the Firm Foundation opposing present-day tendencies and digressions. May more brethren speak out, and strive relentlessly to hold the line where the Lord drew it!
