Why No Answer?

Luther Blackmon

When Mrs. 0' Hair, the celebrated atheist was fielding questions on the Bernie Herman show (T. V. 13) some months ago, I tried for thirty minutes to get an open line, but failed. Mrs. 0' Hair said that if those who could not get their questions on the air would write to her she would reply by mail. I asked her, by mail, the following questions:

(1) Since every effect must have an adequate cause, what or who, caused the universe? It is not eternal. The second law of thermo-dynamics precludes this. I know of no scientist who thinks it is eternal. BUT something is eternal. It is axiomatic that "from nothing, comes nothing." So, if there were ever a time when nothing existed, nothing ever could have existed. But this is only part of the problem of the atheist. The universe shows indisputable evidence of intelligent design and planning, contrivance. Where there is intelligence there is person-intelligence equals personality; and personality equals God. This is q.e.d.

(2) A cell from the man joins with the cell from the ovum of the woman. When the two cells become one it is still microscopic. In nine months it has become a person with a brain that may design a machine capable of taking men to Mars. This person has a sense of moral responsibility; the ability to reason from effect to cause, etc. Where did he get these? Not from his "anthropoid ancestors." They don't have it.

This man and his wife both eat steak. It grows hair on the man's face but not the woman's face. Why? "Law of nature" we are told. We understand that. But what, or who, is nature? Does nature make its own laws? Law requires a lawmaker, agency. Is nature intelligent? Is nature a personality?

(3) No law has been more firmly established or confirmed by science than the law of bio-genesis (life comes only from existing life). But how and where did life originate? There had to be that first life. Remove God from the scene and we have no alternative. We must believe that life originated in dead matter, contrary to all scientific experiment. Did we hear someone say that evolution is the scientific approach to these questions?

(4) If God is a myth, then there is no standard in the realm of morals or anything else except as determined by man. So, if the citizens of a democratic society wanted to make it lawful to destroy retarded children? the helpless cripples; all who are too old to pay their own way; insane people, etc., WHAT OBJECTION COULD THE ATHEIST OFFER? Think of the money it would save! And why should anyone be squeamish about it. We shoot a horse with a broken leg and old dogs are put to sleep with a needle. And what is good old grandma but an improved animal? I dare say Mrs. 0' Hair would vote against such a law. But why? It would be interesting to have her tell us wouldn't it? I think I know. She enjoys the protection and many other blessings provided by the very faith which she seeks to destroy: Our belief that man is something more than an improved animal. THERE IS NOT A MORAL LAW IN THIS, OR ANY OTHER COUNTRY, EITHER BY STATUTE OR BY MUTUAL CONSENT, THAT WAS NOT BORN IN THE VERY SOIL AND ATMOSPHERE WHICH PEOPLE SUCH AS MRS. 0' HAIR SEEK TO DESTROY. And if the atheists should ever succeed in destroying it, they will not like living in the jungle of their creation. Mrs. 0' Hair may laugh at these questions as she did some of those asked on the T. V. program, but she did not answer them. I have not heard from her.
