A Correction

Eugene Britnell, Tuckerman, Arkansas: "In my article "Missionary and Benevolent Societies" (Gospel Guardian, June 27, page 11), in the second sentence of the first paragraph I was made to say, `So far as I know, no one contends that they are parallel in enough ways that they must stand or fall together.' What I actually said was, 'So far as I know, no one contends that they are parallel in every respect, but as I shall show in this study, they are parallel in enough ways that they must stand or fall together.' Evidently a line was omitted. Please read the article again with this correction in mind. If you desire a mimeographed copy of this article, please write me."

Obituary

H. Edward McCaskill, San Antonio, Texas, July 1, 1957: "Henry A. Simpson, a young gospel preacher of 27 years, 5 mos. and 24 days quietly passed from this life in death on June 24, 1957. He was born on Dec. 31, 1929 in Dallas, Texas. His death came after a week's illness in the Nix Hospital here in San Antonio.

"'Hank' Simpson was a member of the South Flores congregation for approximately two years. During that time he was employed by a local insurance company and was encouraged to preach at local congregations as opportunity was presented and then work on a part time basis with the church in Nixon, Texas. His desire to preach in a full time capacity became so strong that he gave up his secular employment and began work with the congregations at Camp Wood and Barksdale. On July 1 of last year he terminated his work with these churches and began with the church in Carizzo Springs, Texas, where he labored until his death.

"I was a very close personal friend of 'Hank's', he being the equivalent of a brother in the flesh as well as a brother in Christ. If I helped and encouraged him in any way I have been justly rewarded in realizing his faithfulness and steadfastness in preaching the unsearchable riches of Christ and holding fast the faithful word. His influence will be sorely missed but his works will follow after him. The many friends and fellow gospel preachers that were acquainted with him will remember him as a young man who desired to do the will of God.

"Bro. Simpson is survived by his wife: Patsy, a son: Roger Dale, a daughter: Joan Marie, his parents: Bro. & Sister J. A. Simpson and a sister: Sister Virginia Gross who all reside at 514 Marshalldale in Dallas. Also surviving are 3 aunts.

"Funeral services were conducted by this writer in San Antonio, Texas at South Side funeral home, June 25 assisted by Bro. LeRoy Sparks, preacher for the church in Crystal City, Texas. Interment was made in Laurel Land Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas on June 26. Bro. Jack Hardcastle of the Sunset congregation and Bro. Fred Bandi of the West Illinois congregation assisted this writer in that service."

Announcement

J. N. Beard, Kilgore, Texas: "Because of an unscriptural attitude toward gospel preaching in general and because there was no evidence that those responsible for the shameful conditions in the church would ever repent, the faithful brethren at Houston and Broadway in Kilgore decided to leave and establish another church. This was done only after every honorable means was used to try to change the situation. It became increasingly evident that the cause of Christ would be better served by separating than by continuing the "fight". Accordingly, the announcement was made June 9, and Lord's day June 16, 1957, Central church of Christ met for worship and Bible study in the American Legion Hall, Hiway 26 at E. Lan-trip St. in Kilgore.

"A more zealous and loyal group of disciples could not be found. When in Kilgore come by and worship with us."

Lewis Dagger, Santa Ana, California: "We just closed a very fine meeting with Brother Ward Hogland of Fort Smith, Arkansas doing the preaching. There were four baptisms and one restoration. Brother Hogland will be with us again next year for a meeting. Brother Jerry Shockley, a member of Birch and Fairview led the singing in a very fine way. The work here is growing and peace prevails in the church."

Floyd Thompson, Berrydale Church of Christ, Santa Ana, Calif.: "Interest and attendance continue to grow in this new work. We are well located in a new housing project. Many who are not members of the church are attending. Our building was almost filled last Wednesday night for Bible study. Yater Tant is to preach here August 18th. Lloyd Moyer will be with us in a meeting soon."

G. G. Lovelady, 14318 South Devlin Avenue, Norwalk, California; July 7, 1957: "We would like you to place in your field notes our upcoming debate August 12-15. R. G. Lovelady affirms that faith, repentance and baptism are necessary for salvation, and G. E. Griffin (Primitive Baptist) will affirm that the alien sinner obtains salvation without conditions at all. Four nights, two of which will be in the Primitive Baptist building in Lennox, and the other will be in our building in Norwalk."

Going Home

Voyd N. Ballard, Ventura, Calif.

If the Lord wills, I plan to return to the state of Arkansas to conduct a gospel meeting beginning Wed. night, July 24th. and continuing through Sunday night, Aug. 4th. This meeting will be conducted at Etna, Arkansas, the spot that was "home" to me the first sixteen years of my life.

I suppose that all of us have feelings and memories about "home" that are almost sacred. I know it is so with me as I anticipate this preaching trip to my home congregation at Etna, Arkansas. It was there that I heard the first gospel sermon that I can remember; And it was there in what was then called Stone Hill Church House that I stood, twenty one years ago on June 11, 1936 and confessed my faith in Christ and was baptized at the hands of Bro. Otis L. Rowe. I was sixteen years old at time. Twenty one years have passed over my head since then, but I remember as tho it was yesterday the burning desire I had to preach the gospel. It seemed that nothing else mattered. I felt like I just had to preach. About one month later the brethren let me try, so on July 26th., 1936 I stood before the congregation and did the best I could to preach a sermon on THE NAME OF CHRIST. And I have been doing the best I could to preach the gospel ever since that day. After 21 years I still have the same desire to preach and I still have the feeling that I just have to preach.

The Lord has been mighty good to me during these 21 years. He has let me keep busy in this work, and while I have never been able to accumulate any of this world's goods, I have always had a living for my family. Sometimes I have "made tents" and my wife has made a lot of them, but I have never felt like we could complain so long as I am permitted to preach the gospel. The Lord has blessed us with three fine daughters, one excellent gospel preacher for a son-in-law. and a four months old grandson that we fully expect will be preaching the gospel in about 15 years. And since I am only 37 years old I expect to have at least another 40 years to spend in the preaching of the gospel.

We moved to California in June 1944 and I have spent the past 13 years preaching the gospel in this state. And now after an absence of 13 years we are "going home" for this meeting. We look forward to seeing our brethren and friends at Etna. We are also expecting to see many in attendance from other nearby places where I have preached in time past. Please announce the meeting where you worship and make your plans to be with us. Let's have a great gospel meeting at Etna, Arkansas July 24th. through August 4th.

M. C. Cuthbertson, Tucson, Arizona, P. O. Box 6391, July 1. 1957. Two baptized; two restored, and two by membership, the past two weeks, at 145 N. Country Club Road Church of Christ. Our work is good for the summer.

A Great Opportunity

Tom Byers The Mid Hudson church of Christ is in the process of purchasing the Temple Beth El property located at 112 Montgomery Street, Poughkeepsie, New York. The total cost of the building, including the pews and carpeting, is 32,000 dollars. A down payment of 3,200 dollars has been made and a binder-agreement has been signed. Temple Beth El has given the church of Christ until September 3, 1957 to complete payment on the 32,000 dollars. The Mid Hudson church of Christ has 12,000 dollars, including the 3,200 dollar down payment, and the Poughkeepsie Savings Bank has approved a loan of 15,000 dollars. However, 5,000 DOLLARS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1957.

We believe we are justified in asking our brethren to have fellowship with us in this effort because we are unable to take advantage of this great opportunity by our selves. We are obligating ourselves with 85% of the total cost of the building and we are asking our brethren to help us with the 15%.

The building, 80 feet long by 40 feet wide, is on a lot that is 88 feet by 189 feet. It will seat 300 people, has 8 class rooms and a basement. The Temple only five blocks from downtown Poughkeepsie however it is located in a residential area. There are seven churches within three blocks of the building. It is only a short distance from the Mid Hudson Bridge and 2 blocks from U.S. Highway 9. Poughkeepsie, a city of 91,000 population (including city & town), is located on the east side of the Hudson River 75 miles north of New York City.
