W. E. Coffman, Box 715, Sinton, Texas, Dec. 3: "Next June we will have completed seven years work with the church in Sinton, I have asked the elders to release me after that time. This is a good church. The elders have just awarded a contract for the building of an air conditioned meeting house, complete with class rooms, for Odem which is seven miles from Sinton. I believe that the Odem church will be self-supporting from the first week. Its members will come from the Sinton church. The church of Spanish speaking people in Sinton now has more than fifty members. When we built the building, and got Brother Fernando Coronado to come here to preach, there was not one member in Sinton. Brother Coronado continues with this church and is doing good work. We are supporting him ...................................................... It saddens us to think about leaving our friends here, but I believe that it will be best for all concerned. At present no arrangements have been made for our future work"
Osby Weaver Will Review Roy Deaver's "Highlights Of The Douthitt- Warren Debate"
Cecil B. Douthitt, Brownwood, Texas At this time (December 5) Brother Wesley Jones of Louisville, Kentucky, is typing from a tape recording all the speeches of the Douthitt-Warren Debate which was held in South Houston, October 23-26, 1956. This debate will be published in a book.
Brother Roy Deaver, who served as moderator for Brother Warren, has begun a series of articles in the Gospel Advocate, under the heading, "Highlights Of The Douthitt-Warren Debate." Brother Deaver's first article reveals clearly that either he is blind with prejudice or he has no regard whatever for truth as a reporter or historian. What love for, and defense of, error can do to a man's heart and conduct is almost beyond human comprehension.
After the book is printed and placed in the hands of the readers, Brother Osby Weaver, who served as my moderator in the debate, will review Brother Deaver's "Highlights." The readers then will have access to the book; and among other things, Brother Weaver will call attention to some of the things said in the book in contrast to things said by Brother Deaver in his "Highlights." The reader then will have no trouble in determining who is the truthful reporter.
I doubt that very many readers of the Gospel Advocate will believe that Brother Deaver has told the truth in his first article, or that he will tell it in the articles to follow; I know that the editor of the Advocate does not believe it; I know that the Advocate editor knows that Deaver's report of the debate is prejudicial and erroneous. I know it, because I know that B. C. Goodpasture is no fool. How can he justify his publishing that which he knows is prejudicial and erroneous, if he refuses to publish Weaver's review of Deaver's "Highlights"? Will he publish it? He will have the opportunity to do so.
If you want a copy of the book of the debate, you may send your order to Cecil B. Douthitt, Publisher, P. O.Box 67, Brownwood, Texas, and the book will be sent to you as soon as it is finished. The price is $3.00 per copy. You may send payment with the order, or wait till you receive the book and then send payment.
Ben Shropshire, Box 5326, Honolulu 14, T. H., Dec. 6: "On October 22 Brother F. B. Shepherd returned to the Mainland, bringing to a close his four years of fruitful work with the church of Christ at Honolulu. The fact that nearly all the members of the Honolulu congregation were present at the airport to give him a warm, sincere 'send off' is evidence of the love and appreciation this congregation has for Brother Shepherd and his work here. Since it was not possible to obtain another man to take his place permanently upon his departure, I agreed to come and work with this congregation until another man could be secured. We have been fortunate in obtaining the services of Brother Eugene Winter, now teaching at Abilene Christian College, who will come to work here during the first part of February, 1957. I shall be returning to the Mainland after fifteen months of enjoyable work in Hawaii to work with the church of Christ in Hillsboro, Oregon, at the first of the year. The Honolulu church, which meets at the corner of Keeaumoku and Dominis Streets, is looking forward to continued growth and success in the effort to spread the gospel throughout the Hawaiian Islands. If you have friends or relatives over here that you would like us to contact please write to us or if you come to Hawaii for a vacation, come and worship with us."
J. M. Wilson, Hagerman, New Mexico, Dec. 3: "I have just returned from Cheyenne. Oklahoma, where we had a very good meeting, with four baptisms and three to confess sins. One lady eighty years old had been a Methodist all her mature life. Her health was such we had to let her in the water with a sheet. This is where I lived when I was a small boy. It was a pleasure to be with these good brethren in the work of the Lord. They had just completed a new building and invited me to help in the first meeting."
