A Little Story About Willie And Nillie

Jack G. Dunn, Shelbyville, Tennessee

Willie and Nillie were identical twins. They looked alike, dressed alike, talked alike, and nearly always agreed on everything. In most respects they even agreed on the Bible.

They agreed, for instance, that baptism by immersion is scriptural and therefore safe. Together they had read:

"Or are ye ignorant that all we who were baptized into Christ were baptized into His death? We were buried therefore with Him through baptism into death ...." (Romans 6:3-4.

Bishop Hoodwinker was to baptize them; but first he had a long talk with them. While he admitted that immersion was scriptural he said that sprinkling would do just as well. "It is true," he said, that no passages definitely teach sprinkling. There is no record of sprinkling being done in New Testament times. But let's be BROADMINDED. Think of TRADITION! Besides, it is so MODEST, so FASHIONABLE, so CONVENIENT; besides, we only have a small baptismal fount."

Nillie wanted to be broadminded, so he was sprinkled. But Willie was obstinate. He wanted to be safe. He was immersed.

Finally, on the same day, WILLIE and Nillie died. Together they stood in the twilight leading past the throne of judgment, and could see the expanse of eternity beyond. Even now, as they walked toward the throne, you couldn't tell them apart — except that one was so nervous. One was so uncertain — visibly agitated.

IT WASN'T WILLIE!
