Let Us Ask For Wisdom

Ralph R. Givens, Lewisville, Texas

James says, "But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." Brethren let us pray for wisdom in dealing with the problems that trouble the church today.

The Word of God is our standard and our source of authority in all matters of religion. If we abandon it, we can offer no excuse that God will accept, and there will be no hope for the future. Everything that we do should be weighed in the light of God's eternal truth. If it can be justified let us do it, if it cannot, let us drop it or never start it.

Calling a brother names does not settle anything. Inferring that some brethren are hobby riders does not make them such. Because a majority believe a thing to be right does not make it right, neither does it prove it to be wrong. Because a minority believe a thing to be wrong does it not make it wrong, neither does it prove it to be right. It will have to be settled by what the Word of God says.

Because most of us have always believed that certain practices or methods of work were right does not make them right. Most of us may have been wrong. If some one can show us by God's Word that we have been wrong in our practice and endorsement of these things, let us give them up. He who shows me the truth is the best friend that I can have. It is not necessarily a sin to change one's belief or practice. If it was, there would be no Christians. There would have been no Apostle Paul. No prodigal son would ever be justified in returning to his father.

If we can show by God's Word that a thing is right, let us do it with patience and brotherly love. Let us attempt to show any who are opposed to it that it is right not by calling them "hobby riders," "factionists," etc., but by the Words of the Holy Spirit. To say "I am confused" or "I am disgusted" does not prove that what someone else is teaching is hobbyism, or that what I believe is right. It may only indicate a need for more knowledge and wisdom. He who is confused or disgusted makes a poor teacher. LORD GIVE US WISDOM.
