"Postal Department Rejects Stamp For Marian Year"

Luther W. Martin

"Washington — Stamps honoring the Marian Year of the Second Assembly of the World Council of Churches (Protestant) will not be issued, according to Assistant Postmaster General Albert J. Robertson.

"The decision was made known in a letter to Dr. Glenn Archer, executive director of POAU, who had written to the Post Office Department, protesting that such postage stamps would violate the principle of Church-State separation — his favorite whine." (St. Louis Catholic Register)

In a recent article published by some of the papers owned by our brethren, I had urged that members of the churches of Christ write to the Postmaster General objecting to the plea of Romanists that a "Marian Stamp" be issued by the U. S. Postal Department. My original source of information to the effect that the Catholics were trying to get this little propaganda job accomplished, was from the St. Louis Register. Now, again, I am indebted to that publication for publishing the "good news" that the government is still attempting to maintain the separation of Church and State.

Those of us who did write to the Postal Department and those of us who merely thought about writing and did not get around to it, might still take the time and effort to express our gratitude and appreciation for the Postal Department's action in this important matter.
