Plagiarism Charged

John W. Wilson, San Bernardino, California

In the January 15, 1954, Watchtower, official publication of the Jehovah's Witnesses sect, appears a five and one-half page article under the title "DO YOU RESPECT PLAGIARISTS?" The charge is made that "A New York preacher and a Texas editor repeatedly take articles from `The Watchtower' and 'Awake' and publish them as their own in their religious paper." The New York preacher is named as "Antonio Ochoa" who is a minister of the church of Christ. The editor and publisher is named as "Eugene S. Smith," and the religious paper publishing the "plagiarized articles" is named as the "Gospel Broadcast." Brother Ochoa was written a letter by Watchtower, and replied promising not to steal any more of their articles, but they offer proof that he is still doing so. Brother Smith, was informed of the matter by The Watchtower, with proof of more than fifteen articles that had been lifted from Watchtower, and Awake, by Ochoa, and published in Gospel Broadcast, and it is claimed that Smith made no reply to the proof but continues to publish articles over the name of Brother Ochoa which are lifted from Watchtower, or Awake. The Watchtower charges that "a pamphlet entitled 'God's People and the Bible,' by Ochoa, was copied from the Watchtower, but the publishers did not identify themselves." It makes one sick to see the capital made of this by the writer in the Watchtower. To think too, brethren subscribing to Gospel Broadcast are being fed through its pages from The Watchtower. This is just another reason why it makes me sick to see a copy of Gospel Broadcast in the home of any good brother. One never knows where much that he reads therein comes from. He may be sure that much of it does not come from the Lord. Much of it for some years back appears to have been plagiarized from Jehovah's Witnesses. Brethren, do you want to renew your Gospel Broadcast? Why not take The Watchtower and get it firsthand.
