News

J. T. Marlin, Mayfield, Kentucky, July 16: "Since our last report two have been baptized here. I have recently conducted meetings at Riverside Drive, Nashville, Tennessee, and Rock Church, Dickson, Tennessee, with nine baptisms and four restorations. I am now in a meeting at Leipers Fork (Hillsboro), Tennessee, with Marion Davis leading the singing. We are planning a mission meeting next month in Symsonia, Kentucky, in an effort to establish a congregation there.'

Joe H. Morris, 2707 Kentucky Ave., Paducah, Kentucky, July 16: "Another fine day at Clements St. yesterday. Two fathers were baptized into Christ. I begin a meeting at Rockvale, Tennessee, tonight.'

L. Arnold Watson, 7450 Chase Rd., Dearborn, Mich., July 16: "Just returned from two fine meetings in Texas. The first, at Mertzon, was the best attended meeting of the four that I have conducted there. Early morning day services (7:30) more than doubled their previous records. Vernon L. Simpson is the local preacher and doing a fine work. He conducted the singing in a fine way during the meeting. The second, at Anson, closed July 11. Four were baptized. Attendance during this meeting was exceptionally fine. Day services ran over 100 each service, 139 on the morning of July 4. Roy Hooten of Mineral Wells, Texas, did the song directing and proved to be a very fine co-laborer. Fred W. McClung is the local preacher at Anson and doing a good work with this fine church. Anson is among the better churches of West Texas. Their new building is the finest in the city and well facilitated for a good program of work. Next month they begin a work in Durham, North Carolina. Several from Anson will go for a meeting to be conducted by brother McClung. Following the meeting, they will put a full time man in this field—entirely supported by the Anson church. It was indeed a pleasure to be associated with this fine group and I look forward to my return in the fall of 1952. My next meeting will be in Wyandotte, Michigan, in September."

Thompson - Borden Debate

O. J. Russell, Durant, Okla.

It was recently my privilege and pleasure to moderate for brother Will M. Thompson in a four night debate with Mr. Albert Borden of the "Oneness Holiness' persuasion. This discussion involving the "persons of the Godhead' and the "baptism of the Holy Spirit' was held in the meeting house of the church of Christ in Coalgate, Oklahoma. Those who know brother Thompson and his ability on the polemic platform will understand why this discussion resulted in a complete victory for the truth. I have heard a number of debates but I think the opposition was more completely put to rout in this discussion than in any I have heard. Good order prevailed throughout the four nights and many were made to see, I am sure, that religious discussions can be carried on decently and in order to the accomplishment of great good. The debate began on July 2 and continued through July 5.

O. J. Russell, 523 N. 12th St., Durant, Oklahoma: "Everyone who is familiar with the conditions in Tishomingo, Okla., will be pleased to know that through the efforts of the church in Durant and with the cooperation of surrounding communities we are trying to salvage the cause in that good town. As we have done in other communities we have pitched our tent in the best location in town and the first night many had to stand or sit in their automobiles. Even though there is supposed to be a New Testament church there this is the first gospel meeting to be conducted there in many long years. It seems that "Diotrephes who loveth to have the preeminence" has hindered such. In fact he "receiveth us not!' The crowds are some of the best ever seen at a religious service in Tishomingo. We shall give further report on our effort in this difficult place.'

Frank Trayler, Chaplain, USAF, 1406 Clower St., San Antonio, Texas, July 19: "It my my privilege to baptize four Airmen yesterday, making a total of six baptisms and one restoration since last report from Chapel No. 4, Lackland Air Force Base. At the Jefferson church in San Antonio, two placed membership last Sunday. I am filling in there since brother Wilmeth moved to Tyler, Texas. For the past two Wednesdays we have had something different. A fine service was rendered by the Laurel St. brethren (colored) and the Sanders Ave. brethren (Latin American). It was an inspiration to learn of their plans for the future and to see how they are endeavoring to reach their race. There were 105 in attendance the first Wednesday and 108 present the second.'

-Lloyd Frederick, Graford, Texas, July 17: "I have just concluded a very enjoyable meeting with the church in Rio Vista, Texas. The visible results amounted to six baptisms and two confessions of wrong. Brother Dick Powell, the local preacher, was an able co-worker. Brother Clarence Campbell of Cleburne directed the singing in a fine way. I will be in a meeting with the church in Osceola, Texas, beginning July 23. My next meeting then will be with the church in Ponta, Texas, beginning August 27. Our regular summer meeting here will be August 17-26 with Trine Starnes preaching. Since my last report I did the preaching in a meeting for the church in Graham, Texas. The work here continues to go forward in a fine way and there have been both baptisms and restorations since reporting last time. Remember to be with us when spending your weekend or vacation on Possum Kingdom lake.'

Roy E. Cogdill, Lufkin, Texas, July 23: "I helped the church in Glasgow, Kentucky, in a meeting embracing the first two Lord's days in July. Nineteen were baptized into Christ. Large crowds and fine interest all the way through. This is a splendid congregation with a conscientious leadership. Brother C. G. Caldwell, Sr., has been with this church as local preacher for a little more than a year. He is doing an unusually good work and in that time has baptized more than fifty. He is a congenial and faithful fellow laborer. Brother Tommie Salmon of Chattanooga, did an excellent job of directing the singing. I am now engaged with the Lovelady, Texas, congregation in a meeting that increases in interest nightly. Lovelady has been a faithful congregation for a long time and gives every promise of continuing so.'

James W. Reynolds, 135 Vernon Place, Pueblo, Colorado, July 16: "Four were baptized and three identified here yesterday. I will begin a meeting with the brethren at Leonard, Texas, August 6."
