A Benevolent Heart?

Larry R. Devore

A recent letter soliciting funds for Midwestern Children's Home of Milford, Ohio, states this startling fact: "85 children turned away last year."

Now these are our brethren who believe in church support of benevolent institutions. As they say, "They like the way they're doing it better than the way we're not doing it." Who can believe it! I have yet to meet a faithful Christian who would have turned away even one (1) child from their door, let alone 85! What a terrible indictment against our institutional brethren! Where are these children, brother Spivey? Where? I will take some of them into my home and help find homes for the others. For shame, that you would turn away 85 poor, unfortunate children from your door! How can Midwestern claim to be a "benevolent" institution and fail to take in these children?

The Dictionary defines "benevolent" as: "1. Disposition to do good; kindliness, charitableness. 2. Any act of kindness; a gift of charity. Benevolence is a subjective disposition of mind that results in beneficence or the doing of good deeds."

Perhaps Midwestern no longer has that "subjective disposition of mind that results in. . . good deeds." Or is it that they will do the "good deeds" if we will supply the money? I wonder if this list of 85 children is like that long list of couples waiting to adopt children? You cannot adopt the children in Midwestern and other homes for various reasons, one of which is that there is a long list of people wanting to adopt. Yet, when they want more money, they come up with a list of children who were turned away from the homes. Why not match the children and the couples up, then the children would have homes that God ordained (Psalm 68:6). How in the name of everything sacred and holy can Midwestern claim to be doing the Lord's work? They ask us to "help us during these critical months." Help them do what? Turn away more children? I can put my money to better use! 'NUF said!
