An Interesting Proposition To Sign

Floyd D. Chappelear

Many brethren who are very much in favor of church support of orphan asylums, the Herald of Truth, and other co-operative endeavors of some of Christ's disciples, are as equally opposed to church support of colleges. To be an ardent supporter of one human project while opposed to the project of another seems a bit fickle but it is still to be accepted today.

One is made to wonder whether or not those who oppose church support of colleges consider those who favor such, and teach such as being an obligation of the church, as being sound in the faith. Either they are sound in the faith or they are not. If church support of colleges is unscriptural, as it is, then those who advocate such are false teachers. This statement brings us to our interesting proposition.

Do you suppose that any among the liberal camp will sign the following? "Those who teach church support of colleges are unsound in the faith." Or, if they refuse to sign that one, would they perhaps sign this one, "Those who teach church support of colleges are sound in the faith." Actually, neither proposition is likely to be signed by those liberal preachers who oppose church support of colleges. The reason? If the first is signed, one is faced with the difficult task of justifying the use of false teachers on such national programs as the Herald of Truth, and, of course, the various cooperative campaigns. If, however, the second is signed, it is admitted that opposition to church support of colleges amounts to nothing more than a voicing of one's opinion. It is not a matter of faith.

Indeed, the two suggested propositions are interesting.
