Acts In Old Testament?

In Fort Smith a few weeks ago Brother Cecil B Douthitt was trying to show some brethren that the Bible does tell "how" the church should care for the needy, and read the first part of Acts 6. Immediately one of the brethren raised an objection that this example was not valid for our day since it happened before the crucifixion! And added with emphasis that "we are under the law of Christ, and not under the law of Moses!" This man, a teacher of a young people's class in the Midland Boulevard Church in Fort Smith, obviously was under the impression that the Book of Acts was in the Old Testament rather than the New. But, even so, he had a fine spirit, and we think would make a much better defender of the orphan homes than some we have heard'

Definition Of A Monastery

We overheard some high school students in Oklahoma City the other day discussing the "technical definition" of a monastery. One of them came up with an answer that fits exactly: "A monastery is a Catholic Home for Unwed Fathers."

Church Of Distinction

Riding down Imperial Highway in Los Angeles last month we caught a glimpse of a big sign on the front of a modest church building. The building was not eye-catching, but the sign was: "Fire Baptized Holiness Church." Which may be right — if it be understood that the tense is future rather than past or present.

Man Of Distinction

In harmony with her happy desire to be "first" in the eyes of the world, the Church of Christ has now achieved still another distinction. She can not only boast of her champion Olympic games star (Bobby Morrow), her champion golfer (Byron Nelson), her champion night club entertainer and TV personality (Pat Boone), but can now add another "champion" to the list: Billy Sol Estes, boy wonder of the Pecos, elder in the Pecos church, free-wheeling, big-dealing, fast-promoting "success" of West Texas farming financiers was recently indicted on more than fifty counts of fraud. His multi-million dollar financial empire burst like a bubble; and Estes was jailed in lieu of a $500,000.00 bond — the highest bond ever set on any individual in the wild and turbulent history of Texas! Once again, one of "our" boys has topped the list!

General Campbell

Newspaper stories a few weeks ago carried a report of an "Americanism Seminar in Bay County, Florida, and stated that Brig. Gen. William P. Campbell (USA-Ret.), one of the featured speakers, was a vice-president of Harding College. We carried the news clipping in these columns. But General Campbell is not a vice-president of Harding College, but rather of the "National Education Program" a political organization promoted by Dr. George S. Benson (he is the president), and which is closely associated in the public mind with the college. Harding College has become known as a center of the extreme political "right-wing" philosophy in contemporary American politics; and General Campbell's views (as well as Dr. Benson's) in that area no doubt led to the erroneous report of his connection with the college. We are happy to set the record straight.

Women Song Writers

Comes now a report out of California that some of the brethren in that area who had previously objected to an invitation song because it was an "innovation" on New Testament teaching and practice have now gone through their song books and put a "verboten" stamp on all the songs written by women! On the grounds that no woman is permitted to "teach" in the public assembly! What next?

Those Catholic "Saints"

Early this month the Roman Catholic Church "canonized another "saint," a Peruvian negro, Martin de Porres, who died in 1638. According to Romish teaching: "The saints who reign with Christ offer to God their prayers for men; it is good and useful to invoke them by supplication and to have recourse to their aid and assistance in order to obtain from God His benefits through His Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ, Who alone is our Savior and Redeemer." Within the last fifteen years Catholics have "certified? two miracles which God has wrought through the special pleadings of this long dead Peruvian — the instantaneous cure of an intestinal ailment in one sufferer and the miraculous restoration of a gangrenous foot in another. Suggestion: why don't believing Catholics implore this negro saint to use his special "pull" with God to work still another miracle and straighten out the integration mess in Catholic New Orleans?
