What Is A Minority?

Ross O. Spears

Jesus classed all people in two groups; the few and the many. Hear his words: "Enter ye in at the strait gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in there at: Because strait is the gate and narrow is the way that leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." (Matt. 7:13, 14) Someone has said: "There is not a social, political, or religious privilege that we enjoy today that was not brought for us by the blood and tears of patient sufferings of the minority." Our own American history affirms this and the history of God's people in all ages also agree that the minority have always preserved his word and restored God's ordinances and commandments. From the beginning there have always been some who would not "bow the knee to Baal." There have always been men who put truth and righteousness above personal comfort and gain and have stood for the right. Upon these God depended yet they have always been in the minority. A remnant was preserved in the days of Noah; Gideon, Esther, Daniel, Jeremiah and others through which God's purposes was continued.

Men like Luther, Knox and Calvin, when the Catholic Church became so corrupt, came out and restored the Bible to the people. Later, men like Campbell, Stone, Walter Scott and others restored the pure gospel and church once again to the world. Then again the church was corrupted by the addition of human organizations and worldliness. Again God's word and church were kept pure by a small minority who were forced from their buildings in order to preach the pure gospel and keep the church pure for coming generations.

Now history is repeating itself. Brethren all over the land have rejected the Apostolic doctrine regarding the work, worship and purity of the church. Sound doctrine is no longer allowed in some places. "Itching ears" want smooth things preached, not negative things. It is not popular today in some places to preach "against" any sin the church; hence, souls will not be warned; sin will not be corrected and souls are the price paid. Those who still want "the whole counsel of God" have no choice but to provide a place to worship in spirit and in truth; where they can have the liberty to preach and teach the pure word of God that they may be saved and their children. They must be willing to suffer reproach and slander; to be falsely accused as "church splitters," "antis" and other un-Christian attacks. They will be in the minority physically speaking, but in the vast majority spiritually as God stands with all who put his kingdom first. — Tompkinsville, Kentucky
