Where Are His Scriptures?

J. T. Smith, Cookeville, Tennessee

Recently I wrote an article in the Gospel Advocate entitled "I wanted the truth." Not long ago after this I read an article in the Gospel Guardian written by one of my brethren entitled "He wanted the truth but he looked in the wrong place," by Dudley Ross Spears, of Owensboro, Kentucky. I would like for us to notice some of the false statements made in his article.

He has charged me with "defecting from the truth," because a brother was able to point out to me wherein I was wrong. The thing that is implied is that brother Basil Overton came to me and CRAMMED these things down my throat. This is not true! Brother Overton did not come to me, I went to him before I knew that he was not an "anti" and I wanted to try to teach him the truth concerning these matters.

It seems to me that brother Spears should have given scripture when he made the statement, "They did benevolence to individuals not human institutions." Brother Spears pointed out that I didn't use any scriptures in my article, well neither did he, as far as proving the issue is concerned.

Brother Spears wants to know why I should go to some man for the truth. There is nowhere in God's word that tells us exactly HOW this work was done. I wonder what he would do if a man came to him, and ask him to prove that Bible study was scriptural. (By this I mean Classes). There is no doubt in my mind but what he would use logic to prove it is alright to have Bible classes. Why? Because God doesn't tell us the exact method we are to use in teaching the Bible. Brother Spears has used such logic in a debate with an "anti" class preacher. I can't understand what has happened to the logic he used on this man.

If you have the scripture don't leave us in doubt. PLEASE tell us where the exact method is given in the New Testament. Come on Dudley, give us BOOK, CHAPTER, AND VERSE.
