Texas Normal Singing School

Edgar Furr, Sabinal, Texas

Ten years ago this June Texas Normal Singing had its beginning. This little school is dedicated to the training of men and boys in the churches of Christ in the field of song leading, teaching and writing. In the past nine years it has served its purpose well in that it has given training to over four hundred men and boys and out of this number some more than thirty-five of these students have purposed in heart to preach the gospel after coming to our school. The influence of this school has reached far beyond our expectations. We have had men and boys from seventeen states in the nation and today we have boys preaching all over the nation and in foreign fields. Some of these we would call special attention to are: R. J. Smith in Germany, Ernest Hillman in Canada, and Oles Pinson in the state of Wisconsin.

Our tenth and best year will begin June 5, 1955. We are expecting our record enrollment this year because our work is becoming more widely known and more men and boys are anxious to have the training and experience we are able to give them with our faculty of five teachers who have been with and in this work since its beginning. With these years of experience in this type of work we are able to do a better job of teaching. There is no other school of this kind. There are several singing schools that have been held over the country but the type work we are doing is different and more concentrated. No other singing school among the brethren has operated for so long a time and yielded so wide an influence.

SOMETHING NEW ADDED THIS YEAR — Since the beginning of our school we have had numerous and continuous requests to have a Bible school at the same time and in connection with the singing school. We have not felt that we were ready until this year but now we are ready and are adding the new Bible Department. You must keep in mind that the students attending the singing school will not have time to take the full Bible course, and those who enroll for the Bible course will not have time to take the full singing course. These are two full and complete programs with separate faculty. Preachers, elders, Bible class teachers and all other church workers, both men, women, boys and girls of all ages, may enroll for the Bible school work but only men and boys from age twelve may enroll for the singing school work. This is an opportunity to plan a profitable vacation for the entire family. In our new Bible department we will have such subjects as Bible, English grammar, teaching methods, homiletics, public speaking, voice, the study of hymn music and many special lectures.

Your greatest opportunity to develop and improve your church workers will be offered this year in a concentrated effort at Texas Normal Singing School which is located in Sabinal, Texas. This is a special opportunity for preachers who have not had college work and for others to do refresher work. You should enroll early to help us make preparations for all who will want to come.
