Taking A Second Look

Guthrie Dean, 1900 Jenny Lind - Fort Smith, Arkansas

Godly brethren of yesteryear used to pray to the Lord as follows: "And save all in heaven and that will be enough." I always wondered what ELSE there was anyway. Well now we have the answer. From Maryknoll, N. Y. comes this bit of information: "Heaven 'Not Enough. "' "It is no longer enough, nor is it time to be looking only up to Heaven," Msgr. Edward T. O'Meara, national director of Roman Catholicism's Society for the Propagation of the Faith, told a class of 28 Maryknoll missioners departing for overseas stations. "We must look out to the world to see its people and its needs," the Catholics, Protestants, and some brethren, no longer look toward Christ and heaven, but to the world and to its social ills. Jesus lived on earth during a period of social and civil turmoil and injustice; and He never said a word about social reform nor for civil disobedience. He admonished His disciples to render to Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's. Matthew 22:21. His people were in bondage; there was a yawning gulf between the rich and the poor; and social injustice was rampant. And Jesus merely said: "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven." Matt. 5:44-45. Certainly Christians are concerned with the social welfare of others; but to lose sight of the value of human souls, and to take our eyes off our heavenly goal, is a serious mistake indeed.
