The Water Of Life

Jesse M. Kelley

Sermon Outline Text: Revelation 21:6; 22:17.

Introduction: Christianity and its blessings are frequently compared to pure water in the Bible. (John 4:14; 7:37, 38.)

Points of analogy:

I. Water Typifies The Gospel By Its Necessity A. Without water life is impossible. Is essential to every phase of life.

B. Spiritual life is impossible apart from the gospel of Christ. (John 6:63; 2 Thess.

1. The gospel imparts life — salvation. (1 Cor. 15:1, 2; John 6:66. 67.)

2. Think of the spiritual darkness the world would be in had it been without the gospel the past two thousand years.

II. Water Typifies The Gospel By Its Universality A. Water quenches the thirst of all- rich, poor white, black, great, small. It knows no geographical or national boundary lines. Wherever man is found.

B. The gospel is like unto it. "Every nation" (Matt. 28:19; Mark 16:15, 16; Acts 10:34.)

1. By one Spirit all are brought to God. (1 Cor. 12:13; Col. 3:10, 11.)

III. Water Typifies The Gospel By Its Abundance And Freeness A. God "abundantly pardons" (Isa. 55:7) and makes all grace abound. (2 Cor. 9:8, 9.)

1. The poor can obtain it. (Matt. 11:5; Acts 3:6.)

IV. Water Typifies The Gospel By Its Power A. Water is one of the world's most powerful forces.

1. It cut the Grand Canyon.

2. Obliterated a sinful world. (Gen. 6.)

3. What power except God's can still the troubled water and hold back the breakers?

B. The gospel is like unto it.

1. It is powerful in saving the soul. (Rom. 1:16.)

2. In leading men to God. (Psa. 19:7.)

3. Because it is the seed that contains the power of life. (Mark 4:14; Luke 8:11.)

4. It is powerful because it is living. (Neb. 4:12.)

5. Because of its influence. (Isa. 32:2.)

Conclusion. The sinner has every assurance that the power of the gospel can cleanse every sin however great it may be. It can give refreshment to the soul, and lift the burden of every transgression (Rev. 22:17; Matt.11:23-30.1
